Fall Chapter Profile- KidSport Wood Buffalo
KidSport Wood Buffalo officially launched in May 2010 with the goal of ensuring that all youth in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo can enjoy the positive benefits of participation in organized sport. The successful launch of this new KidSport chapter is due to the tremendous efforts of the volunteer committee as well as support from a number of local organizations.
The Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre at Keyano College has assisted KidSport Wood Buffalo with hosting both an 'Energy to Play' and 'KidSport on Campus' events. These outreach events give local youth the opportunity to participate in a full day of physical activity programming and also learn about the KidSport program. The Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre has also generously provided meeting space and other resources to the local chapter. Recently, KidSport Wood Buffalo was also selected as the charity of choice for the inaugural 2011 Syncrude Boreal Open CPGA tournament. Details on this partnership will be announced later in the fall, but this event will provide great exposure for the KidSport program in Fort McMurray and surrounding areas. Another success for KidSport Wood Buffalo this past year was been their participation in the Loblaws 'Give a little, help a lot' campaign. Local Loblaws stores in Fort McMurray were among the largest fundraisers across Alberta for KidSport.
Looking forward into 2011, KidSport Wood Buffalo has identified volunteer recruitment and program awareness as two key priorities. Additional volunteer resources will allow the chapter to further promote the program locally and also participate in more events and fundraising opportunities. In closing, 2010 has been a great launch year for KidSport Wood Buffalo and its committee members Leanne Patey, Roxanne Andres, Adelle Wordrope, Brian Mullally and Mike Connolly. With many exciting partnerships and events already scheduled for 2011, the KidSport program appears poised to continue playing a significant role in the lives of youth in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo for years to come.
